Joeney

A 3d platformer with a optional cheat mechanic 

​Joeney is a 3d platformer game made in 4.5 weeks to a brief of cheating where the main mechanic has to aid the player while bypassing the rule of the game.

I made this mechanic show and hide walls to aid the player to help reach goals and areas the player may want to reach but also made the level that the player does not need this mechanic to win.

Joeney's story

You play as Joe a determined person wanting to win a parkour tournament, Joe and their Jump assistant tool companion travel to different areas achieving new goals at each hop, skip, and jump.

What i did

I did all the design work, that included a game design document, level design and time management for myself as well as the programming for everything. All textures was obtained through Textures.com and sounds from Soundsnap although the music was done by a friend of mine "Karlec" on youtube.

Most of the assets was made with unity and the pro builder plug in will the grass model and tress were provided by my uni.

 

Features I'm most proud of

I was very proud of designing the "cheat" mechanic for this game, it was a very hard brief to work on but I made a neat working mechanic and made a small level to highlight this mechanic, I wanted to make this mechanic assist the player but not be the solution out right because I felt that would take away from the players experience. 

What i learnt

I learned to work with a client during this project, communicating what they like, dislike, and changes they want, this was a little difficult in the beginning.

I also learnt a lot more about how to make a proper character controller script using unity's character controller component.

Additionally, I learned how to program certain mechanics such as a wall jump using ray casts, how to hide objects and show hidden objects on button press, and how to make a high score function, unfortunately, this function only works in unity game editor but not the game build.
